Live: for a minimum of 12 months as an equal member of your carefully selected host family in USA. Your host family will provide your own room, all meals, internet and access to transport for your weekly classes. Remember, you choose your own host family!

Childcare: Provide 45 hours of childcare per week (no more than 10 hours per day). In return you will receive weekly pocket money.

Travel: during your 2 weeks paid vacation, weekends off or your additional travel month after completion of your stay. The US has so much to explore – either on your own, with friends or on one of our organized tours!

 Legal: Our SML Au Pair programme is regulated by the U.S. Department of State which offers the only legal way for au pairs to travel to the USA. All au pairs enter the USA on J-1 visas. If you would like experience living abroad for a year, Study More Languages Au Pair might be just the right choice for you.

Working as an au pair is an adventure, you will be living with your Host Family. This combination of work, travel and study is not easy to find. Here is what is included:

  • Flight tickets and travel arrangements to and from your host family are covered, and the programme begins with a three -day training course in New York.
  • Your room and meals are provided by your host family, they will also pay you $195.75 per week. Since your living costs are taken care of, this is simply pocket money for you!
  • As an au pair you will take classes of your choice at a local university or college and your host family will contribute up to US$ 500 during the year towards this.
  • During your year you are entitled to 2 weeks of holiday with pay. Your J-1 visa allows you a 30 day grace period at the end of your year during which you can travel throughout the USA.

There are several requirements au pair candidates must meet before applying:

  • Be between the ages of 18 and 26
  • Speak conversational English
  • Have a passion for working with children
  • Commit to at least 12 months of living with and providing child care for an American host family
  • Have your high school diploma
  • Have no criminal record
  • Be in good health


Here’s how the process works:

  1. Fill in our information request form.
  2. Complete an Au Pair USA application.
  3. Participate in a personal interview.
  4. Learn if you’re accepted. If yes, we will begin the matching process.
  5. Participate in interviews with host families. We will help you to get better results!
  6. Agree to be the au pair for a host family.
  7. Work with Au Pair USA to obtain your visa and make travel arrangements.

Once you arrive in the U.S., you’ll enjoy a three-day Orientation and Training Program in New York City before meeting your host family. You’ll not only receive important child care and safety training, you’ll also be able to start adjusting to life in the United States. Plus, you’ll have time to explore and enjoy New York City.

While you are staying with your host family, you’ll have the support and assistance of an Au Pair USA Local Coordinator. Your Local Coordinator will hold monthly meetings and activities for you and other au pairs in the area. She or he will also be available to help you with any issues or concerns you may have during your stay. Our staff in New York City is also available 24 hours a day in case of emergency.
